BUILD CONFIDENCE AND STRUCTURE MEANINGFUL DISCUSSION
by O'Keeffe and Dundon
Although there are many important aspects to teaching an online course, I choose this topic (see attached video) as my most important because of its' importance to our ultimate goal as an instructor, which is engaged meaningful learning. Students must feel connect to the subject they are discussing as well as the other members of their learning community. Learning communities are established by building trust. This can be accomplished by conducting student ice breakers, giving students the opportunity to get to know each other and feel confident sharing information with each other.
Once trust has been established, it is essential that the discussion is structured so that the learning can be meaningful. Having a mediator can accomplish this goal. He, or she, must determine the needs of the group. They must have a purpose, a problem to solve. Other responsibilities of the mediator are: keep the group focused; keep the discussion positive: and continually re-enforce trust among the members of the established learning community.
